| A British Leyland Triumph
Stag in British Racing Green. I've always wanted one ever since watching
Hazel during the 1970's. I bought the Stag in 1998 in what I believed to
be good all round condition but needing some work for originality.
1998. First job to be tacked was the major oil leak from the rear diff. With the diff and rear suspension out I stripped off the under seal, and cleaned, painted and re-bushed the rear suspension. Unfortunately the under seal was hiding a few horrors which meant the floors needed replacing, but on the positive side the engine and running gear were all OK. In the second year of ownership, 1999, I concentrated on the front end which involved a complete strip and re-condition to the front suspension and also painted under the bonnet and replaced the timing chains. Other work under taken so far includes replacing the headlining in the hard top, replacing the soft top with the correct mohair type with beige lining, and in 2002 I re-conditioned the gearbox. 2002. I suffered my first major breakdown. With the Stag back home and the engine apart it transpires that the water pump / jackshaft gears have stripped. This means a major rebuilt is required. I sourced a replacement bottom end, the plan is to fit this bottom end while decide what to do with the original block. Having stripped it down I found that it has had new mains, big ends and rings. The bores were smooth and the crank has had a regrind. . I've posted a few pictures of the block on the engine stand. Looks like I got lucky with that purchase. 2003. My Stag is running again, and it's just sailed through the MOT I've a few minor problems to sort out, such as the interior lights have packed up, the exhaust blows from where it was smacked on a speed bump, the overdrives stopped working (probably just the fuse) and a slight coolant leak from the left hand head. But at least it's running and I'm using it as my every day car. 2004, A pretty quiet years motoring with only the handbrake cable, front disks, fuel pump and re-suspension washers being replacing. I took to opportunity to use stainless steel replacements from Chris Witor. I had the Stag rolling roaded in September and was measured showing 147 bhp at the rear wheels. Not bad for a 28 year old car. Winter 2004/05. I've decided to have the Stag re-sprayed in the spring so before this can happen I need to finish off all the body work jobs that I've been putting off over the last few years. These include replacing the rear valance and repairing the boot floor, repairing the inner A Posts. Pictures of the respray can be found here. 2006. I've used the Stag a fair bit, nothing eventful. Bought a few NOS parts on eBay to replace pattern parts but that's it really. Current pictures, Nov 2006 here 2007 Crap weather so I've not used it at all really. Must do better 2008. Fixed the leaking exhaust and currently have the front suspension off to clean and remove the overspray from the re-spray. It need a new sump gasket as it's leaking like the Exon Valdez but I've got an OEM Unipart one together with a new sump which which should cure it.
