1971 Dormobile D4/6 Volkswagen Type 2
From the earliest days of the
Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter in the early 1950s, camper conversion companies
started to realise the potential of this vehicle as a fantastic base vehicle
for their conversions.
Turn the clock forward twenty years
to 1971 and Volkswagen (GB) had approved camper conversions from three
independent companies. These campers were available through the VW dealership
network and the conversions available were from Danbury Ltd. based in Essex, Devon Conversions based in Sidmouth
and Martin Walter Conversions (Dormobile Ltd.) based
in Folkstone. Standard ‘empty’ VW Transporters would
be delivered to these companies where they would be kitted-out with a camping
interior before being dispatched to a VW dealership for sale.
On January 18th 1971, Mr.
Harry Heyworth from Sale in Cheshire had made the decision that his 1967
Hillman Minx Estate was due for replacement. He visited the local VW
dealership, Hulton Motors in St. Helens Road, Bolton
where he placed an order for a brand new Dormobile
D4/6 Camper in Pastel White, specifying a locking petrol cap and underseal as optional extras. The total price of his Camper
came to £1452 7s 9d and the balance after trading-in his Hillman Minx came to
£852 17s 9d. VW had the Camper in stock and it would be delivered on 23rd
January…..
