| Frequently Asked Questions | ||
| WHAT MATERIALS ARE TAKEN? Grass mowings, leaves, weeds, branches, prunings, large branches, logs, roots, pet bedding. | ||
| WHAT CAN I PUT MATERIALS IN? We require at least one Otter Rotters garden bag to be put out for collection. We discourage the use of bin liners as they cause us a lot of problems and can be confused with rubbish. | ||
| WHY USE OTTER ROTTER BAGS? These bags are larger than compost/fertiliser bags and extremely strong - they will last several seasons; are easy to fill and for us to empty; they stand up by themselves while filling; they are very visible for us- so we are less likely to miss them and they are less likely to be picked up by the rubbish collection. | ||
| SHOULD I CLOSE UP THE BAGS? No - we may have to collect up to 500 bags in a day and this really slows us down. | ||
| DO WE STOP COLLECTIONS IN THE WINTER? No - we collect all year round. However, during .November, December, January, February we ask that you contact us to tell us if you have a bag to be collected. | ||
| WHAT ABOUT VERY LARGE QUANTITIES? We can arrange special collections for large amounts of garden materials outside usual collection days. Please ring us for a quote - 01404 549055 | ||
| HOW MUCH CAN I PUT IN A BAG? Because of Health and Safety considerations and just looking after our backs we apply a max weight to bags of 20kg. Bags in excess of this will be refused - if in doubt, spread the load over several bags. This applies especially to our garden bags as they have a larger volume- but our new garden bags have markings on them indicating to what level they can be filled. Remember, if you can’t lift a bag its probably too heavy. | ||
| HOW CAN I FIND OUT WHEN OUR NEXT COLLECTION IS? Ring 01404 549055 , e-mail admin@otterrotters.co.uk or look at our web site on www.otterrotters.co.uk. Alternatively visit your nearest OR tag and bag outlet who will have a list of collection dates or come and see us at Zero Waste Place, Unit 12, Ottery Moor Lane, Honiton. | ||

| WHAT IF I CAN’T GET TAGS? Please let us know if your local shop has run out of tags. If you have no tags you may leave out cash equivalent to £1 per bag. | ||
| CAN I ATTACH THE TAGS TO THE BAGS? NO, as this slows us down having to remove each tag. Instead, leave the tag/s under a largish stone or brick and leave next to the bags. We empty the bags and then leave the stone on top of your bags to prevent them blowing away. | ||
| WHAT TIME DO BAGS HAVE TO BE OUT BY? We start collections at 8.30 am so, depending on your location please have bags out by then. Please bear in mind we may not follow the same collection route each collection day, and so may arrive at a different time one week compared to another. In winter your collection will probably be earlier than it is in summer. | ||
| CAN I BRING MATERIAL TO YOUR SITE? No - our site is closed to the general public. | ||
| WHERE CAN I GET BAGS FROM? Most of the towns and villages we cover have outlets selling our tags and bags. See Green Waste Collection Areas. Or visit us at Zero Waste Place - or ring 01404 549055 | ||

| DO YOU SELL THE COMPOST? Yes - just ring the contact number below. Leave your name, telephone number, address and how many bags you require. Compost is £3.50 for 20 k bag or 4 bags for £12. We can also supply compost in bulk at very competitive rates. | ||
| DO YOU DELIVER? We deliver compost, mulch, firewood and kindling free on collection day within our collection areas. | ||
| HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR COMPOST? Our compost is an all purpose soil conditioner, improving soil drainage and moisture retention. A good soil structure makes weeding easier and facilitates working generally. It is a good pot-growing medium and can be used as a component or by itself for bringing on seedlings. Our compost is not sterilized before bagging, so some annual weeds may grow initially. However, during the composting process the material reaches a temperature of around 60 degrees which is sufficient to kill off most weed seeds and plant diseases. Our compost is riddled and has a fine texture. For mulching or just digging in we can also supply unriddled compost at £2.50 per bag. | ||
| IS OR A CHARITY? No - we are a “not-for-profit” community enterprise. Otter Rotters is governed by a board of directors which is elected annually by the membership. Our meetings are open to the public although only paid-up members can vote. We have paid staff but also rely on volunteers. | ||
