In-Dis-Guise
was a series of workshops for children aged 9+, set up through the
homework club project and based in Moulsecoomb and Whitehawk Libraries
on Saturday mornings throughout the Spring holidays. The workshops
were designed to build confidence with academic skills as well as
personal skills. Invitations were sent out to our attendees and
advertised in Phoenix magazine.
In
Dis-Guise set out to support children in a creative way, providing
them with high quality sessions which would be personally challenging
and would make a difference to the way they perceive themselves.
The
series comprised Dramarama which focused on different means of
self-expression through music and mask-making; Where Did Red Riding
Hood Go Wrong?, highlighting protective behaviours by using drama
and storytelling; Do You Dig Callig?, focusing on using handwriting
as a creative activity; Bannerama, which concentrated on promoting
self esteem through personal flags; Creativity Centre which aimed
to introduce film as a medium of expression; and The History Museum.
The
workshops demonstrated to the children that their responses to tasks
are important and that if they use their responses as a starting point
they can demystify much of what is required of them as school children.
