Guide Dogs Bill Set to Close Loophole
A loophole in the law means that drivers of private hire vehicles and minicabs can refuse to carry guide dogs. RNIB, Guide Dogs for the Blind, DaRt and other campaigners are working to close this loophole. At present only black cabs are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).

The campaign involves trying to get the DDA amended to cover all taxis and lobbying local councils to use their licensing powers to require private hire vehicles to carry assistance dogs. A bill has been introduced in the House of Commons by Neil Gerrard MP to amend the DDA. At time of going to press, the Bill is due to receive its second reading. You can contact your local MP, and impress on him or her, the importance of this bill, by phoning the House of Commons on 0207 2193000.
