A
group of young footballers from Moulsecoomb and Bevendean have captured
the MCA Youth Football title for under 12's by winning all of their
matches. The boys who represented the 67 Centre, under the name Scoombers
United, played teams from the Brighton area over a 12-week period
and came out on top. Many of the boys also attend the Monday night youth
club meetings at the 67 Centre and have grown as a team through regular
training sessions in Moulsecoomb.
Coaches
Matt Maxwell and Rob Brookes have been delighted with
the boys' progress and feel that all the hard work put in during
the early weeks have paid off. Each player played his part in the
success of the team and showed plenty of fight and commitment. On
Saturday February 23rd the boys played at Greenlees Park against
their closest rivals Hove YMCA. Needing to win Hove took the lead
early on and against the run of play. The keeper Martin Judge had
no chance with the goal and was visibly annoyed with his defence.
The defence that comprised of Tyrone Brookes, Harry Banks
and Steven Judge held firm despite having to deal with many
attacks. Sean Cahill, Ashley Hill, Peter Godfrey
and Ricky Banks solidly led the midfield. Some of the passing
was of Brazilian quality.
However,
it was the two strikers that really shone. Nathan Brookes
who scored four of the five goals including a 30-yard screamer from
a free kick. Gary Down his partner in attack was magnificent
in all distribution and was unfortunate not to score himself. The
best goal came from Marvin Smith: a half volley from the
edge of the box which rifled in to the top corner with the quality
of a Dennis Bergkamp finish. Marvin was in outstanding form playing
the 'floating' role.
All
in all though this team has worked really hard and notable absentees
Sonny Lee Cooper, Stephen Whittington, Josh Jimenez,
Ben Harris, and Richard Coomber made up the strength
of a very strong squad. Well-done lads and here's to next season.
