Cancer Research UK Race for Life 2002

A unique series of 100 events across the UK, Race for Life 2002 was an opportunity for every woman to walk, run or jog to raise money for Cancer Research UK. This year the event hit it's target with over 250, 000 women taking part. So far, a total of £6, 610, 298 has been raised to find new cures for cancers that touch women's lives. The Brighton Race for Life was held at Stammer Park on 7th July. In appalling weather conditions of non-stop fine rain (slowly soaking the participants to the skin) the women from the Wellsbourne Centre took part - many of them running in memory of a loved one they had lost to cancer.

The starting hooter sounded and everyone took off at a steady pace, the more experienced sprinters speeding ahead while most runners jogged or walked around the 3 kilometre course encouraged by spectators cheering them on in the rain. By the end of the race everybody was soaked and tired but felt a huge sense of achievement having received their medal and goody bag. The women had planned a picnic on the grass, but due to the weather set off home for a well deserved soak in the bath and just maybe 40 winks before enjoying a Sunday roast! The Sama Karate Organisation
The Sama Karate Organisation meets at St. Martin's Primary School, Hartington road every Tuesday afternoon after school from 3pm. They also meet every Wednesday from 6pm at Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre.

The club is well attended and many Moulsecoomb children come along. All ages attend and there is also a good mixture of boys and girls. Beginners start off with a white belt and then work their way up to a black belt. Most children are successful in gaining their belts (grading).

Karate classes give children confidence, discipline and also a good level of fitness. Each lesson is £3.50 and if the child is interested in continuing lessons long term there is a £15.00 subscription fee. The Organisation is looking for new members and anyone interested please phone Lee Gibson on 588850.
