Whitehawk Boxers Put Up a Fight

Whitehawk Amateur Boxing Club put on a sell-out show at the Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre on Saturday, 24th of April. The Open Boxing Show was the second event organised by Gary Emins, head coach of Whitehawk ABC. A capacity crowd of over 600 people enjoyed a packed programme, which included junior and senior bouts. Five Whitehawk boxers took part in the senior bouts and as there were many local people in the audience they had plenty of support.

Mark Williams was the first Whitehawk ABC boxer to step into the ring and his opponent was Simon Mitchell of Dynamo ABC. The fight was well matched but was stopped in the third round when Mitchell had to retire, making Williams the winner. He was later awarded a trophy for the Best Up-and-Coming Whitehawk boxer at the show. The next Whitehawk boxer was Shaun O’Brien who boxed against John Vernador of West Hill ABC, which was stopped in the second round. James Brewster of Whitehawk ABC then fought against James Mills of Chichester ABC. Although this was a close fight Brewster was not on his best form and lost on a majority decision.

Wesley Beagley had a great fight against Kevin Ives of Kings ABC, which he won by a unanimous decision. Kings ABC is keen to have a rematch with Beagley and this has been arranged for the 22nd May. There was an exiting finale to the evening with the final bout, which was between Neil Baker of Whitehawk ABC and Sean Mulvihill of Onslow ABC. This was an all action bout which had the audience on their feet. Baker won the fight with an unanimous decision and was also awarded a trophy for being the Best Boxer from Whitehawk.

Whitehawk ABC holds its training sessions locally and anybody requiring more information should contact Gary Emins on 078 1861 1403.
