Hi,
my name is Sally, Sally Bark, I work at the Bridge
as a Community Education Development Worker. Today I'm going to talk
about the Bridge
Netball Club which started about two years ago, with the help of
Ronnie Titley, who is the East
Brighton Sports Development Worker.
We spent about six months practising and getting
better, then last summer we joined the BMW Netball League.
We did ok, won a few games, lost a few games and then we joined the Winter
Netball League, which
is like the proper league where you have to become affiliated to
Netball England. The Scarman Trust
granted us the funding to become affiliated, buy our kit and
pay for the training, coach and the cost of the netball courts as it works
out quite expensive.
The
team is made up of women from Coldean, Bevendean and Moulsecoomb and also myself and one of the other teachers from Falmer
school.
We had our first season in the Winter League, which we won, we came
top so we are in Division four, so now we have won a trophy. Ann
Kennedy, our trainer, lives in the area and she has been
playing netball for ages, around ten years and she won a trophy as
well for
training us. Anne won a special cup that you get for your contribution
towards netball. We found applying to the Scarman Trust for funding
really easy and it was quick too so we were really pleased about
it. We have successfully re-applied and have now received another
year's funding.
We
meet every Thursday at Falmer school from six 'til seven thirty and
anybody is welcome to come along, any age and ability. As we really
would like to form more teams and put netball for Falmer, the Bridge,
Moulsecoomb and East Brighton on the map. We play our matches at
the University of Brighton and there are two games, you either get
an "Early" or a "Late": the early starts at quarter
to seven and the games last for an hour and then you get a late where
the games start at eight o'clock.
So if you are interested why not come along and see or even have a
go for yourself.
