The
Young Black Men's Group are students of Falmer
School who meet
every week, discussing challenging issues, planning
activities and finding a way forward. Phoenix found out what they have
been up to.
One
of our members visited a local theatre show, called Slam Dunk. His
reveiws on the show explained it was about basketball which is something
that we like. Slam Dunk touched on issues of black
people and when brought
to the group, we were able to share our simularitiesand talk
about our differences.
On
Making The Radio Show.
We
got alot from making the radio show, at first we were nervous but
once we got started we were ok. We gained experience of talking
from a professional
platform. We
are proud of the way it was put together, you learn so much from
planning a show: having to choose music, poems and jokes. Putting English,
African
and
Indian music in the same show bought different cultures
together reflecting the diversity of our group. We
had fun!
Issac read
a poem from Benjamin Zephaniah, "This
has also inspired me to write because of the way black people have
fought against
racism."
Ramadan
in Pakistan is a special time
On christmas day in jamaica the sun will always shine
Diwali in India
brings all the colours out
And don't forget in Tibet each day a Poet shouts.
What
we like about the group.
We
learn about each other, how to work in a group as a team also learning
about Black History. We enjoy going on trips with the group talking
about things that affect black people only. Knowing we are
in a safe place to discuss issues,
sharing our views and listening to each other and making friends.
Thank
you and best of luck to Shofique Ali, Issac
Masaraure, Dodu Mboob,
Maisam Mohamed, Nabil Mohamed, Salim
Mohamed and with thanks to Kemi,
the youth leader of the 67 Centre
in Moulsecoomb.
