Welcome to the Gary Smurthwaite website.

I am an experienced Vehicle Technician, based in Hartlepool, specialising in Vehicle Diagnostics, Remaps and Servicing. We specialise in VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda using the ODIS software.

So if you need dealer diagnostics for VW group of vehicles, go no further. Using ODIS diagnostics gives me the full dealer capability for flash programming and any security related programming like component replacement of immobiliser control units and key programming.

No need now to go to the dealer!

We can now offer Mercedes Benz Servicing and Diagnostics at competitive prices, call me for details.

To see how we can save you cash

In my diagnostic work I use some of the of the most up-to-date equipment.

This includes 'dealer level' diagnostic tools for:

  • Audi, VW, Seat, Skoda, Bentley and Lamborghini.
  • Ford
  • Citroen and Peugeot
  • Jaguar
  • Landrover
  • Vauxhall
  • GM ( many vehicles including Hummer, Chevrolet, Isuzu, Daewoo )
  • Toyota
  • Honda
  • Mercedes Benz
  • Smart
  • Volvo
  • Mazda
  • Renault

Other tools we use in our work is the Diagnostic Smoke Machine, used for detecting an array of faults in intake systems, exhaust systems, fuel systems, oil leak detection and much more. This enables me to correctly diagnose fuel trim faults (on engines that runs too rich or weak) which many other garages fail to detect. We can also detect Turbo Boost leaks using the Smoke machine or by using Nitrogen by pressurising the boost system. We use an Oscilloscope for testing components and wiring on Engine Management systems which allows us to take the guess work out of the diagnosis. It is probably one of the MOST important diagnostic tools we use, a tool that most other workshops lack!

Air Conditioning service should also be carried out even in cold climate, keeping the Bactria from forming causing bad adours. Call to discuss this service.

Gary Smurthwaite has achieved the IMIAL Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling, a Legal requirement for the safe handling of Greenhouse Gases.

An alternative to superchips

With the ever increasing cost of motoring these days, I am sure, like millions of others, you are looking for ways to cut costs, and save money. But the easiest way to save money in my opinion the is, without any doubt, fuel economy. If you could get more miles per gallon and increase the performance of your vehicle at the same time, wouldn't you be interested?

Yes, of course you would.

How can I do it and what's the catch?

It's simple - there isn't a catch. You just pay for a Remap which we then make some specific changes to your engine Maps and notice the difference immediately.

How does it work?

We remap vehicles using the car's diagnostic socket. This process is also known as chip tuning. The benefits of having your car chip tuned, apart from transforming the cars performance and drivability, is the fact that, in most cases, it improves fuel economy. For example a VW Transporter 2.5 TDi improved fuel economy by 20% after the chip tune/remap. Unlike some companies we do not use inferior programming tools!

What's the cost?

See our Prices and Services page for full details.

How do I find the make and model of my car?

Select the make of your car in the drop down Vehicle List in the right hand column.

Please read the money back guarantee on the remaps page.

I am now able to carry out engine ECU cloning on many ECU types. This allows me to programme a used ECU from another car to allow it to work with the original car. This is a cheaper alternative to a new ECU that needs coding and programming to the original car. Please contact us for details. For security reasons proof of ownership will be required for this service.

This is an ECU being tuned that has anti-tuning software installed - not a problem for us at all!
