Life Drawing 2009

Following Michael Smith’s participation on the AA2A scheme (Oct 2008 – March 2009) staff at Barrington Farm set up a weekly life drawing class with a clothed model as an introduction to the process of looking at and drawing people. Many of the service users who go to Barrington Farm had never experienced life drawing before, and often people draw from memory or with preconceived ideas of what a person looks like. The challenge was to look more carefully and slowly. The artists have worked hard to broaden and develop their skills.

Outside In

Featuring Barrington Farm Artists Barbara Symmons, Ian Partridge and Michael Smith

4th August – 8th November 2009

Pallant House Gallery
9 North Pallant
Chichester
West Sussex PO19 1TJ

Outside In showcases one hundred and fifty pieces of work of outsider and marginalised artists from across the South of England. All other submissions will be screened as part of a slide show. Artworks have been selected for exhibition from entries and judged by a panel of experts. Six award winners will be chosen and will be able to choose either a solo exhibition or a residency in the studio at Pallant House Gallery.

Outside In was set up in 2006 to offer opportunities for marginalised artists including a biennial open art competition. Outside In is trying to create a level playing field where access to the art world is possible for all who create. It's aim is not to turn people into ‘artists’, but to challenge the art world to embrace and make itself accessible to a wider range of individuals and ways of making.

Winner of the Gulbenkian Prize, Museum of the Year 2007, Pallant House Gallery is the host of Outside In. It has an exemplary learning and community programme with inclusion at its heart. The Gallery houses one of the best collections of British Art in the country.
