Meditation

There are many forms of meditation.  Guruji teaches the meditation with a mantra, especially the Gurumantra.  To recite the name of the Lord (japam) and to meditate on the name and the form of the Lord, is the easiest and the most effective method.

Meditation is necessary to achieve the following:

1. to control the mind
2. to get rid of the bad karmas and the six demonic qualities (anger, greed, lust, desires, ego, and jealousy)
3. to concentrate the whole awareness on God and
4. to realize that the Atma (soul) dwells in us

Guruji always quotes the shlokaAtma linga Shiva Tu.”  It means: “Shiva, you are my soul.” Guruji reminds us of its real meaning, that we are all god.  We are all particles of God.  We have all come out from God.  We are all sons and daughters of God.  But during many incarnations we have lost the power which God has, by getting involved in negative karmas (actions).

In order to become able to realize God within us, we have to go through a cleansing process in which sadhana (spiritual practices like meditation, breathing exercises, pooja, bhajan, havan and selfless service) is very important.

Sai Baba says, “By dhyana (meditation), you develop jnana (spiritual wisdom), by japa (recitation of God’s name) you develop bhakthi (devotion) and by both, you cleanse your heart of the canker of ego.  You link yourself to God by the chain of love, through the recitation of the name from the depth of your heart and with full awareness of the meaning and its nuances.”

Our karma (results of negative actions) pollutes our chakras (energy centres) in the main subtle energy tube of our body (Sushumna nadi) so that our divine energy (Kundalini) cannot develop.  So, the purpose of meditation is to get rid of karma that covers our souls and to get the lost power back, or to awaken the Kundalini

Awakening of the Kundalini can be achieved through the breathing exercises (Pranayam).  In a subtle structure, you cannot use a brush and detergent powder, but you can have this effect by using the air and the mantra when practising Pranayam.  Thereby, the tube is gradually cleansed and the Kundalini awakened.

Guruji recommends that we should practise Pranayam before starting the meditation in the morning.  The best time for meditation is the early morning (3 to 6 a.m.)
