More About STAA

STAA's Services.

STAA delivers individual, one–to–one programmes of creative activities to elders with mental health needs and people with dementia. People are referred by professionals working in health and social care, family members and self referrals. Potential health and wellbeing outcomes are identified for the person referred. The service is free of charge to individuals living in Sandwell and is delivered by STAA’s artists: professional, experienced specialists. Individually tailored activities take place in people’s place of living. This method of working is inspired by Tom Kitwood’s theory of ‘Person-Centred Care’ (Kitwood, T. 1997 Dementia Reconsidered: the Person Comes First Open University Press). STAA also delivers arts activities to groups in hospital, residential and day centre settings.

STAA's Services Support People

STAA works with elders with a mental health need: people with long standing conditions and those recovering from an acute episode, including depression. STAA helps in people’s recovery by providing services that help to build confidence and provide new opportunities for accessing creative hobbies. STAA supports people return home after a hospital stay or works with people at home to help prevent them needing a hospital admission or re-admission.

STAA works with people with dementia at all stages of their illness. STAA supports people in the earlier stages of dementia to stay living at home by helping them to maintain their skills and interests for as long as possible and keep their links with family, cultural activities and hobbies.

For people in the later stages of dementia creative activities provide the opportunity for breakthroughs in communication and moments of pleasure through experiencing sensory stimulation. Pleasure, enjoyment and fun improve people’s well being at any level.

STAA’s services for groups promote socialisation and encourage friendships as well as giving participants the opportunity to experience creative activities.

STAA provides sessions for carers as a respite from their caring role to support their mental health and sessions for couples so they can reconnect through a shared activity and share an enjoyable experience.
