We believe God speaks to us from His Word, the Bible. Its message is as relevant today as 2,000 years ago.

The God of this World

It has been said that if Christianity is from God, why hasn’t it made more impact on the world? Why hasn’t it stopped war, greed and evil?

There may be a number of answers to that question, but let the Bible give just one from 2 Corinthians 4 verse 4:
"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

The tardy progress of Christianity is due to the opposition of Satan and his helpers. Notice the name that’s given to him in text ...

1) He’s called ‘the god of this world’
Satan is given this label because of the position he has over worldly people who give slavish obedience to him. They may not be aware of this bondage because he is the arch-deceiver leading people astray. But nevertheless, the world pursues his plans and submits to his rule. His sceptre holds universal sway unless cast out by the Spirit of God.

2) Notice the occupation that engages him
"He blinds the minds of them which believe not" – depriving people of spiritual sight. How does he do this? One of his chief methods is to produce an exaggerated opinion about the value of worldly things.

He puts special lustre on worldly objects. Just as a small coin held close to the eye can blot out the sun, so he places the things of this world directly before us and blots out the things of God.

The world and its things become a carrot, which he dangles before us. In this way, we become too attached to earthly things and haven’t got time to think about our soul’s destiny.

3) Notice his SPECIFIC purpose in blinding the mind:

"Lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."

What is the glorious gospel which Satan wishes to prevent us seeing? It’s the good news that "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life."

Yes, God sent his Son (who is the image of God, the exact likeness of the Father) to die upon a cross for our sins – so that God could justify, pardon and admit into heaven all who truly turn from their sin and believe in His Son.

The devil’s great objective is to turn people away from this message. He hates to see men and women being admitted into that place which he has forfeited because of his sinful pride.

Dear reader, if you haven’t before, turn to the Lord Jesus, read His words in the New testament and pray that He will give you spiritual understanding.

Ask Him to cast the devil out of your life and make you free. Jesus can cast him out at a word. He did this when He was upon earth and will do it from heaven – for all who turn to Him in believing prayer.

Strong as the great enemy of man is, we have in Jesus one who is stronger and can rescue us from the devil’s hands and enable us to renounce him and all his works.
