Oxford Alexander Training School

Head of Training: Stephen Cooper

The Training Course

The training school has been running since 1993 to train teachers of the Alexander Technique. It is recognised by STAT (The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique) - visit the Society's Website at www.stat.org.uk.

The course lasts three years (9 consecutive terms). You can join in any term - Autumn, Spring or Summer. Classes are daily from 9.15 - 12.30.

The best way to learn about the training is to visit the training school. You can arrange to do this by contacting the director of the school, Stephen Cooper.

Stephen gives private Alexander Technique lessons at his home in Headington, Oxford and in Central Oxford (in the Medical Practice at 28 Beaumont Street). During the summer, he runs an open class several times a week - see details below.

It is possible to get a Professional and Career Development Loan to help with the costs of training

'Professional and Career Development Loans are bank loans that can be used to help pay for work related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year's relevant unpaid practical work). The Learning and Skills Council will pay the interest on the loan while you are learning and for one month afterwards. The loan can be used to pay course fees or other costs such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support such as grants or bursaries. Because the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loan product, they should only be considered as an option once all other student funding options have been investigated. For further information on financial assistance to support your learning, please visit www.direct.gov.uk/adultlearning or contact Careers Advice on 0800 100 900.'

Summer School

This year (2009), there were morning workshops on most Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from mid-July to early September. There were also a few evening sessions. Morning workshops were from 9.15 to 12.30 and evening sessions were from 7pm - 9pm. Most classes took place at The Coach House, Quarry Road, Headington, Oxford. A few were held at at 10 York Road, Headington Oxford OX3 8NW.

There will be a similar programme of classes next summer (2010). Details will appear on this website in about May. You are welcome to get in touch before then if you want advance information. Here is an outline of the summer programme.

The classes are open to everybody, and during the course of the summer beginners, experienced pupils, students in training and teachers of the Technique will come along to join mixed classes together to explore the Technique.

The Director of the course, Stephen Cooper, finds the summer classes a refreshing opportunity to work with all levels of experience of the Technique. The classes also act as a forum or meeting place for everybody who is interested in the technique, in learning about it and in exchanging views and ideas about it.

Details of the summer school (dates, prices, etc) can been viewed at Oxford AT Summer School (this is the 2009 programme, which will be updated soon - or soonish), or you can ring Stephen Cooper on 01865 765511, write to him at 10 York Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 8NW or email S.C@btinternet
