Dear Shankill Mirror

Perhaps I am wrong but it would seem that the recent sad closure of the Shankill Road Mission has passed off without a whimper from our leading newspapers and community representatives? I attended the last Sunday service on October 11th and the effect on the loyal, if now ageing congregation was moving to say the least. Many had spent a lifetime in the Church and more than a few tears were shed on the morning of the service.

As a former member of the 36th Boys brigade I have a great respect for the building and so too do many of the officers and company who attended the church. It would be such a shame if the local community were not reminded again just how important this church was and what it contributed to the Shankill for over a century. I look forward to perhaps some mention, in a future Shankill Mirror, of the great input that the Shankill Road Mission had on thousands of people since it opened in 1898.

Yours sincerely
James Sherman

Dear Shankill Mirror

I wonder if you could please print this short appeal? I am trying to compile a booklet on the history of the Old Lodge Road. I am looking for photographs of the area or perhaps anyone who would know where I could access any photos for my research. There has been much written about the Shankill and surrounding areas but nothing exists about the Old Lodge Road. I grew up there as did many others and I am sure that some historic information would be of great interest. I would appreciate any responses. Reply to 07759947103.

Yours sincerely
Mary Ann Quigley

Dear Shankill Mirror

I am writing on behalf of Springdale Blues Supporters Club to voice the concerns of our members at recent reports in the media regarding the allegations from the other eleven clubs in the Irish Premier League that Linfield FC are getting preferential treatment from the IFA because Linfield are the custodians of Windsor Park.

When we travel to other grounds to watch Linfield compete we bring significant support, while other clubs at best, bring a couple of hundred supporters for example Glentoran, Crusaders and Cliftonville therefore not bringing revenue to Linfield FC as we do to the other eleven clubs in the league. We also, as attending supporters help finance the social clubs at these grounds.

As supporters we feel if this witch hunt of our club continues then we, as one of the largest Linfield Supporters Club will discontinue our support of rival teams social clubs, we will not purchase programmes or food outlets at the grounds. We feel this is the only action we can take in support of Linfied. We are taking this action independently and have neither sought nor been given any advice from Linfield FC on this matter.

Yours sincerely
N Dunseith
Secretary
