In Memoriam TIM STEAD (1952-2000)

"The Spirit of the Forest"

The 2-meter high sculpture carved by Eduard Bersudsky from burr elm is situated next to the grave of Tim Stead in Wooplaw - the Border Community Woodland near Galashiels.

We found a dead elm tree with burrs - exactly what Eduard was looking for to make this sculpture - during the shooting of Murray Grigor's film about the Millennium Clock in the forest which Tim saved from the axe and where he is buried.

Paul and Martin pulled the tree out the ground so that the root structure was left intact,

Edith allowed Eduard to use her garage as a workshop and when sculpture was ready covered it with numerous layers of cuprinol and oil,

Tatyana did translation and rough finishing,

Scott did bronze filling and fine finishing,

Neil and the guys from the Woodschool dug the hole, filled it with cement and installed the sculpture,

Alex, Sam and Sergey made a plinth of stones and fern,

Cassandra, Chris, Nikkie and Anne cooked for the guests at the inauguration,

Peter took photographs...

No fees, grants, applications etc - it was a mutual tribute to Tim in the style he loved so much - starting as one artist's idea, it grew into happy teamwork which united the many people whom Tim gathered together once more...-
