About Us

Located in Lerwick, capital of Shetland, Jamieson & Smith Shetland Wool Brokers Ltd, are long established as the islands biggest buyer of the Shetland Wool clip and during the 2007 season we purchased in excess of 240,000 kilos of the Island's total raw wool production.

The company was founded during the 1930's by the Smith family of Berry Farm, Scalloway and, as the business grew, re-located to our current premises in Lerwick.
In 2004 the company was sold to the current owners, Curtis Wool Direct, an international wool group based in Bradford, West Yorkshire

Situated in the centre of Lerwick's Old North Road, and overlooking the harbour, our premises are in an excellent central location for the Island's farmers and crofters to deliver their wool clip.
We have traditionally catered for all scales of Shetland 's wool production and accept deliveries ranging from 10 kilos through to 6000 kilos and more.
Each suppliers clip is weighed in and recorded on a computerised tracking system which automatically allocates a grading number.
The raw wool is then carefully graded according to it's quality.
From the very coarse, used for carpets, interlinings and mattresses, to the very finest soft handling wool used in high quality knitwear.

When grading our finest wool, Super Fine, we must adhere to the following points.
* Style (crimp), breed characteristics and uniformity of quality.
* Strength, springiness and handle ( softness ).
* Fibre fineness, with high quality Shetland degree of fineness 56s - 60s.

Our wool is then baled according to it's grade and shipped to one of the companies Bradford depots for further processing.
After further detailed sorting and scouring (washing), most of the wool is sold on to specialist users in the textile trade.
A percentage of the finest wool is spun into high quality knitting yarns to be supplied to home users and high quality textile manufacturers via our retail mail order service.
Also available from ourselves are 100% Shetland Wool tops in their undyed natural colours. These are ideal for hand spinning and felt making.

It has been brought to our attention that there is continuing confusion between ourselves and other Shetland based companies with similar names.
