Why Was The Charity Founded?
Simon Hawkridge
Founder"Coping with the onset of a sudden and permanent physical disability due to an accident or an illness can create seemingly endless physical, emotional and practical problems for both the person and those involved in their lives.
This is a nightmare that becomes a reality for many people every year. Like most of us, I did not think that it would ever happen to me, but it did.
In 1986 I broke my neck in a road traffic accident and I am now paralysed from the neck down for the rest of my life. I was 20 years old at the time and determined that my physical disability would not prevent me from living a fulfilled and independent life in the community.
It was my own experience of coping with the difficulties of living with a severe physical disability and the problems I had to overcome in order to be able to achieve independence that inspired me to found a charity to help physically disabled people to lead fulfilled and independent lives."
