Materials and Construction
Material
and construction methods were radically different to normal domestic
construction in order to satisfy both usual and performance criteria
e.g the long free-standing
walls require a reinforced concrete frame. Special steel beams used
to create the large 12M span and cantilevered main roof with slim overall
cross section. Unique structural frame-less glass walls (without fins)
have an ultra large 1.8 x 3.6 module grey limestone was used extensively
externally and internally for continuity. Sto render and insulation
system has been used to provide both high performance and seamless detailing
(i.e. no DPC, coping or expansion joints). Underfloor heating was used
to eliminate all grilles or radiators.
The
kitchen bathroom and special furniture are all-purpose designed and
through the use of ventilation and flue pipes are co-ordinated into
a single vertical duct element. A 80m deep well was sunk to provide
a permanent water supply to the lake.
