Sound Service is owned and run by Gareth Magennis, who has many years' experience in professional audio electronics repair. Gareth first came to Leeds in 1979 to take an Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree at Leeds University. Being a classically trained musician, he soon realised it might be more fun playing keyboards than playing with transistors, and apart from an early stint repairing equipment for Scheerers Music Shop, spent the next decade playing in bands instead, mostly abroad. This was indeed a lot of fun, much better than working for a living.
But all good things must come to an end, and that end was realised when he stopped having fun and instead found himself playing "The girl from Ipanema" to Norwegian restaurant diners who would rather he wasn't. A couple of business attempts then followed, designing and building a Roland DCB to MIDI interface and a memory expansion board for a sampler, but neither project got off the ground so it was soon time to get a proper job at last.
The next few years were spent working for a large PA Hire company in London, where he undertook all the hire stock repairs, installed Pro PA systems in venues, and maintained all the installed systems in the Town and Country Club (now The Forum), and most of the other Mean Fiddler Organisation venues. This also included lots of crewing and loading artics with gear at live gigs for the likes of Primal Scream, Manic Street Preachers, Happy Mondays etc. He also took on live sound engineering work, including a few months engineering "The Chippendales" (no laughing please) at the Astoria Theatre, London, several WOMAD festivals, and was resident System Engineer and technician at the Ministry of Sound Club.
