St Andrew's - An Introduction
As an army church, St Andrew's is not officially part of the Church of Scotland; however it has strong links with it. The minister is an ordained Church of Scotland minister. The main hymn books are Church Hymnary 4, the current Church of Scotland's hymn book, and its predecessor Church Hymnary 3. The structure of the service is a traditional Church of Scotland one. Therefore in addition to being a local church for those in the Aldershot area and a garrison church for a number of regiments of the British army, St Andrew's draws its congregation from a much wider area than normal, as people come from various parts of North Hampshire and West Surrey for the Church of Scotland style service. The congregation is predominately civilian.
There is a crèche and a junior church.
St Andrew's is also a place of remembrance. The church was built in the 1920s, with money raised by fundraising, to the Glory of God and as a memorial in remembrance of soldiers of the Church of Scotland and kindred churches who lost their lives in the First World War. Within the church building there are a number of individual memorials.
Service Times
With the exception of Christmas Eve and Remembrance Sunday, services commence each Sunday at 11.00am and last approximately one hour. The Remembrance Sunday service begins ten to fifteen minutes earlier ie 10.45 to 10.50am. There also is an additional Christmas Eve service at 11.30pm.Communion is not celebrated as frequently in the Church of Scotland as in other denominations. In St Andrew's church there are normally only four Sundays per year set aside for the main communion. These are the second Sundays in each of January, April, July and October. (The exception being that on some years communion is celebrated on Easter Sunday either as an alternative to communion on the second Sunday in April, or in addition to celebrating communion on the second Sunday in April.)
