Obtaining Windows XP Setup Boot Disks (Q310994) Windows XP Setup boot disks are available only by download from Microsoft. The Setup boot disks are available so that you can run Setup on computers that do not support a bootable CD-ROM.

How to create the boot diskette from the image

1. Download the required executable file to your desktop or other suitable folder. Double click on the executable file to start the boot diskette image extractor program.

2. Click OK to proceed

2. Click OK to proceed.

3. Insert a blank floppy, click OK

3. Insert a blank floppy diskette ready to receive the boot diskette files then click OK

4. Confirm the operation

4. If the diskette is not blank you will be prompted to confirm the operation. Warning: as part of the process the floppy diskette will be formatted and all existing data on the floppy will be lost.

5. Wait for the image to be written

5. Wait for the image to be written and the progress bar to reach 100%

6a. Write protect diskette fig.1

6b. Slide up the switch to leave a hole fig.2

6*. Label the diskette. Finally, slide up the switch on the back of the diskette to write protect it (except for Partition Resizer diskette, which creates a log file). This is important, especially when the diskette is  used for MBR virus removal, it will eliminate the risk of an MBR virus infecting the boot disk.

* NOTE: Do not write-protect Partition Resizer diskette (step 6). Partition Resizer requires write access to create a log file on the diskette.

Note

Upon completion you can boot to the newly created diskette by  restarting the PC with the diskette in the floppy drive. On some PCs you may need to change the boot sequence in the BIOS to give the floppy drive boot priority. Be sure to test CD and RAM drive services are working correctly before committing to reinstalling Windows.

Modifying the regional settings

Some of the above boot disks are configured to use UK regional settings. To modify them to US regional settings remove the following four lines from the end of the CONFIG.SYS file.

Type  EDIT CONFIG.SYS at the A:\> prompt then remove the following five Lines:

device=display.sys con=(ega,,1)
country=044,850,country.sys
install=mode.com con cp prepare=((850) ega.cpi)
install=mode.com con cp select=850
install=keyb.com uk,,keyboard.sys

Save the changes and reboot to the boot disk to use the new regional settings.
