QuickLinks:

The Steam Packet Inn sits on the quayside overlooking the harbour. Personally run by the Scoular family for over 20 years the hotel is the perfect place to escape from the pressures of modern living. Recently voted the Best Inn in Scotland by Les Routiers the hotel has been recognised by AA and Which for its value and service. The hotel caters to an eclectic mix of locals, visitors and fishermen who come to enjoy the informal atmosphere of the pub.

The picturesque village of Isle of Whithorn nestles around its harbour on the southernmost tip of the Machars peninsula.. The village has a long history of seafaring and trade dating back to the Vikings and St. Ninian through the era of the topsail schooners, both legal and smuggler, to the age of the Steam Packet ships, and now to the fishermen and leisure craft that ply the Solway. The village has a peaceful air. Life moves at a slower pace with the daily flow of boats and tide the closest to the hustle and bustle of city traffic. People still stop and talk on the street and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

The Isle is a perfect base for exploring this unspoilt corner of Scotland. Numerous excellent golf courses are within an easy drive on quiet roads. Fishing is widely available on the lochs, local rivers Bladnoch and Cree, and on the sea itself by boat or from the shore. There are numerous trails or quiet roads down which to walk, ride or cycle, maybe exploring some of the numerous historical sites throughout the area. Tales of times past can be seen at the Whithorn Dig and Museum and for the Bibliophile a visit to the Wigtown Booktown is a must. Sailing and diving are popular pastimes from the sheltered harbour.

Location

The Steam Packet Inn is located in the picturesque fishing village of Isle of Whithorn at the southernmost tip of the macahrs peninsula in SW Scotland. Travelling from the south the directions couldn't be easier, take the M6 up past Carlisle before turning onto the A75 for Stranraer. On reaching Newton Stewart simply follow the signs for isle of Whithorn; you can't go past us, as we are the last village before the sea! Travelling from the North either come down the coast road to Girvan and Stranraer or take one of the minor roads through the Galloway hills to Newton Stewart before heading down to the Isle.
