Engaged directly by the Client, Stewart Design produced all working drawings, schedules and templates necessary, from the Clients design, for Johnsons to cut and work the 600 cubic metres (1475 tonnes) of stone necessary for the project.
The cornice at the top of the tower included 3 corner stones with a diameter of over 2 metres, weighing 2 tonnes each and fixed at a height of 15 metres above ground level. The stone itself is a non load-bearing cladding to a 450mm thick blockwork wall. The general walls are built in 120mm thick sawn bedded walling, with a bold pitched face, manufactured in random lengths 450 to 750mm and in 307mm high courses. Corners were formed in 350mm bed 'L' shaped quoins with added definition given by 30mm wide drafted margins. The stone was bedded in traditional lime mortar with 5mm joints. Other areas of the building were specified in a contrasting fine rubbed ashlar as 75mm hand-set cladding., both straight and circular. Prominently featured, around the perimeter of the building, is a large section moulded plinth and a mid-level string course, together with ashlar to a mullioned bay window; a detailed ashlar parapet; one-piece gable footstones; weathered and moulded copings and traditionally designed apex stones to the gables, complemented by 350mm diameter decorative ball finials.
