How to get warnings of Points of Interest (POI) using TomTom Navigator for Palm
Requirements:
- TomTom Navigator for Palm
Method:
1. Ensure you are running version 4.40 or above of TomTom Navigator for Palm - if not, use the link above and download the update, following the instructions in order to upgrade.
2. Once upgraded, download and install POI Edit.
3. Run POI Edit and open the AutoUpdate Manager.
4. Choose pocketgps.co.uk from the top left window, and then double-click a POI dataset, such as pocketgps_uk_gatso, for example.
5. IMPORTANT: When you double click, rename the dataset that is being saved to your hard drive to a reasonable name, as this is what will appear inside TomTom - for example, rename pocket_uk_gatso to SpeedCams. Click OK when done, and ensure you know where you saved it.
6. Choose AutoUpdate Now to download the datasets you choose to your selected filenames in your selected folder.
7. Using your favourite method (card reader, direct export) copy the .ov2 and .bmp files that are created into the ‘GB Navigator Map’ folder on your TomTom Navigator SD card (or memory stick if using a Clie).
8. Launch TomTom Navigator and go into the Preferences. Select ‘Maintain POI’ and choose ‘Warn when near POI’. Select your favourite options, distances and sounds and voila, your system is now set up to warn you audibly when you are near any of the POIs within the datasets you set up. Go ahead and set up warnings for as many datasets as you like.
Notes regarding safety cameras and POI warning systems...
Remember these wise words from the Pocket GPS site:
“Please note that our database is not to help you speed in areas where you shouldn't, it's to help you lower your speed throughout all roads that you drive, and to be aware of potential areas where Safety Cameras may be in force for informational purposes only, so you can be more vigilant at monitoring your speed throughout these locations and ensure that you don't accidentally travel a few miles per hour above the speed limit like when traveling down a steep hill, or when you're overtaking another vehicle. We also do not guarantee that all fixed, mobile, truvelo or specs cameras are in our database, so please do not believe that this database contains the entire camera list as it doesn't, but this does support a vast majority of cameras you will see on our roads today. We also accept NO liability whatsoever for you receiving any speeding fines or points on your license through using this database or guarantee the accuracy of the data contained within this database either expressed or implied.”
