information on the census returns, with no street names or house numbers
recorded, but there are sufficient markers such as the inn, the Rectory, the
church, the school house and individual farms to show the enumerators
path as he made his way along the main winding village street. |

Comparison with maps of
the mid-late 19th century shows that although some houses have been added in
the past 50 years, the majority of the cottages and farm houses recorded in the
censuses are still standing, and the layout of the 19th century village is
still recognisable to the modern visitor. |
