SXF DATABASE

The following is a full list of the SXF Land-Rover registrations known to me at 21/09/2009, in Registration Number order. Inclusion in the list does not imply that the vehicle is definitely still on the road, but (except where specifically marked as otherwise — eg 'Scrapped') they can be assumed to have been in use nearly 30 years after first registration, as compilation of the database started in October 85.

The list has been gathered from personal contacts and published sources (mainly the Land-Rover Series One Club Register of Vehicles and Newsletters/Legends) and the date in the 'First Reg' column is that given (where available) in those sources. If it's followed by a question mark, then it's because I have made an intelligent guess, based on neighbouring registration numbers. If that intelligent guess is different from the date given in the Register, then that date is shown in the 'Alt Reg' column.

Description is as given in the Register, or from observation. The second line gives the owner and area (where known). If there's more detail, then there's a clickable link on the right. It's hoped to include available photos at a later date.

'Billing 93' refers to 45th Anniversary Rally, where all 7 SXFs present were grouped for a photo. Likewise, 'Shugborough 98' and 'Epen 98' refer to the 50th Anniversary Rallies held in those places.

References to certain numbers being applicable to other types of vehicle are based on Barry Holliss' book 'The Green Machine', which includes a full list of all the SXF numbers as originally issued. There were a number of other registration letters for Civil Defence Land-Rovers. SXF was the 1957 batch, but CD was disbanded soon afterwards, so they saw very little service — that's why so many of them passed into the civilian world in excellent durable condition. There were vehicles other than LRs which had SXF registrations, and indeed there are still a few Bedford RL 'Green Goddess' fire engines in active reserve which have the letters — they come out during firefighters' strikes etc.

Other letters which were applied to LRs over the years (and I'm afraid that I don't know the dates, but they would be before 1957) are ALC, ELM, LYO, NYR and RGC (of which there were a large number, many still on the road, but being older than SXF fewer have survived). Incidentally, if you see a LR with FUV plates, it will almost certainly be 2-wheel-drive only. The armed services had quite a few of them (for light duties such as airfield patrol), and when they were demobbed they were given civilian registrations in that series.
