This is a fun drill that gets the kids working hard. they will be tired out by the end of this if they do it properly.

Transition is a key part of playing football. Learning to switch between attack and defense is key to winning games. It is essential that everyone realises that as soon as possession is lost EVERYONE is a defender, including the strikers, and it is everyone's responsibility to switch mentality quickly.

Equally, it is essential that when possession is gained - all the players are alive to possibilities. This drill will help with that switch between modes of play, by playing a series of 2 x 2 games.

Split into two teams - A & B. Set up a 2 yard square, central to goal, around 20 yards from goal, and place 4 or 5 balls in the square. Put a cone about 15 yards from this square, on each side of the square, about 20 yards from goal. A team lines up behind each cone.

The game starts with the first two players of each team playing each other. The coach feeds in a single ball, and the players try to get posession and work a goal-scoring opportunity. The key part comes when a player shoots at goal.

If the player (say, from Team A) misses, or the shot is saved, then the player who had the shot must go and fetch the ball, replace it in the 2 yard square box, and then return to their team. They the 'tag' the next player in their team who then join the game. The next player can only join the play once they have been tagged.

Meanwhile, one of the two players from Team B can get another ball from the square and start an attack. They effectively have a 2 vs 1 situation until the next player from Team A is tagged to join the game.

Alternatively, if the shot from Team A scores a goal, then one of the players from the Team B fetches the ball and returns it to the square - with the same rules about tagging as before. In this case, one of the Team A players goes to fetch the next ball from the square, and it is they who have the 2 vs 1 situation until the next player from Team B joins the game.

The emphasis on transition comes from the desire of players to either exploit or reduce the 2 vs 1 situation that occurrs whenever a shot is taken.
