Our History

In 1958 My father and his first wife opened a Day Nursery on Alfreton road in Sutton in Ashfield, following discussion with a local G.P. who saw a need for professional childcare in Ashfield . This was a pioneering and very risky move they made, they purchased a large detached property called BROOKLYN, selected staff, put an advert in the local Free Press and that is where the story began .
Within months the nursery was expanding fast, to meet demand my father invested in a mini-bus and began transporting children into Brooklyn from all over Ashfield, Mansfield and the surrounding areas, families were rarely owners of one car let alone two to transport their children themselves.
Soon it was evident that Brooklyn had outgrown itself, so new premises were sought, a fabulous 1880 built stone house with ample land and lots of woodland was found at Annesley and this is the present site of Brooklyn today.
Over the years the nursery expanded to take 80 children, with my Father doing 2 bus runs morning and evening, and also another driver doing a journey for him. Lots of children brought in to be cared for in a wonderful setting.
Brooklyn has an excellent local reputation, very rarely needing to advertise as word of mouth has served us well. We are presently caring for children of the children that used to attend in the 1960's! An advert of excellence in itself!!
With the regulating bodies for childcare changing so many times over the years, Brooklyn kept up to date with the changes, whilst maintaining a philosophy of exceptionally caring childcare in a fun and comforting environment.
With the advent of healthy competition and stringent Ofsted regulations, Brooklyn grew smaller in the 1990's to follow national guidelines and have a place number set at 50 children .A different slant was now put on the day at the nursery to include the foundation stage of the National curriculum however the warmth and fun of Brooklyn will never fade, take a look and see the happy faces of our children being cared for by mature well qualified staff who have been part of Brooklyn's fabric for many happy hard working years .
