Switching Spark Gaps are similar in construction to Surge Arresters and are
used as plasma switches designed for controlled pulses, typically from
storage capacitors, rather than transients. Spark Gaps will operate many
thousands of times at high voltages and at peak current values of a few amps
to the kiloamp range.
Applications are diverse, ranging from electrical gas ignition devices for
cookers to higher voltage ignition units for gas discharge lamps. They may
be also used in operating regions of high current and voltage where solid
state Thyristors cannot be used.
Triggered Switching Spark Gaps are available for particular military uses.
