Many of the Main Distribution Frames in use today were designed many years ago and in general continue to give satisfactory service. However, the protection modules that were supplied during the original installations have not been modified to keep up with new developments and up to date practices. Surgetech specialises in modifying and upgrading protection magazines or modules to provide more advanced protection, without going to the expense of replacing the Main Distribution Frame.

The improvements will typically involve changing the old magazine for a new Surgetech magazine upgraded as follows:

- replacing 2-electrode surge arresters with modern 3-electrode types.
- incorporating a failsafe mechanism to protect against power crosses which have caused disastrous telephone exchange fires.
- replacing the "melting metal" type failsafe with a specially produced more reliable material.
- modifying the magazine to house hybrid GDT/semiconductor protection.
