Most overvoltage protection components only deal with surges caused by the effects of lightning. Surgetech have developed some exciting and innovative products which not only give protection against the effects of lightning but also give protection against much faster pulses. These fast transients can arise from Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulses (NEMP) and other similar phenomena. Other sources of fast transients include Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) and motor switching, which can lead to the repetitive nanosecond risetime pulses such as those defined in IEC 1000-4-4. Ultrafast components need to be mounted with low inductance connections to prevent any loss in performance. Surgetech are able to provide and weld low-inductance striplines to components as a service, and give advice on mounting for the best performance. The SUR22 Ultrafast Hybrid Surge Arrester has no series elements and may be used as a drop-in replacement for a standard Gas Discharge Tube. There is a range of Sparkover Voltages, and surges up to 20kA can be handled with response times of less than 1 nanosecond. For further details see TECHNICAL NOTES. The SUR700 range of Ultrafast Coaxial GDT Surge Arresters can handle surges of up to 5kA with nanosecond response times. Gas discharge tubes are normally placed across a line and because of their low capacitance give good performance up to reasonably high frequencies. The SUR700 range has been designed with a characteristic impedance of around 50 Ohms enabling them to be used in the GigaHz frequency range. Due to their concentric construction they resemble part of the coaxial cable. Several diameters are available, and some are small in size which enables them to be incorporated into military circular connectors (e.g. Mil-C-38999) in place of the usual filter pins giving light high density protection ideal for avionics applications.
