Karen first started playing badminton at the Rustington Village Hall when she was 8 and progressed pretty quickly to win her first Sussex junior title at the age of 11. From there, she joined the Sussex Badminton junior squad training, being coached by Tom Bowker and at 13 started to play in senior tournaments and represent the Sussex Senior County Badminton. Also, at 13, she won a number of junior national titles and was picked to play for England under-16s.

At 15, she was playing under-18 international badminton and won her first major international title, becoming the European Mixed Doubles Champion. This was a title she successfully retained two years later aged 17, when she also added the Ladies Doubles and Team Event Gold Medal.

At 17, she was selected to represent the England Senior Team, obtaining her first international cap in Canada and winning her first international title in the Ladies Doubles. From there, she continued to play international badminton and travel the world for many years, making fifty international appearances for England.

Over that time, her most notable achievements were:

During her playing career, she was involved in coaching and this continued when she retired from international badminton. At this time, she also moved into team management and worked with the England under-18 squad for two years before moving up to coach and manage senior international squads at two Uber Cup Championshipsand two European Championships.

The highlight of this period was coaching and managing the England Team for 4 years, prior to and during the highly successful 1998 Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Karen also provides a racket-stringing service.
