Hamlet
by William Shakespeare
directed by Martin Mulgrew
Hamlet is possibly the most famous play ever written.
It is certainly the most quoted, and it is among the
most powerful and influential tragedies in the English
language. This exciting new production by The Tower
Theatre Company focuses strongly on the human drama
at the centre of the story, and the decadence and
corruption of the House of Denmark.
It is believed that Shakespeare wrote the role of
Hamlet for Richard Burbage. It has been played by
numerous actors (both men and women) since,
including Edmund Kean, Sarah Bernhardt, John
Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Ralph Fiennes, Kenneth
Branagh and, recently, David Tennant.
Famous Ophelias include Sarah Siddons, Jean Simmons
and – more recently – Helena Bonham Carter and Kate
Winslet.
There have been numerous screen version of the play,
and its plot and themes have been the inspiration
for many other films, including Disney’s Academy
Award-winning The Lion King!.
