The 'Prior's Gull' Larus sp.
Prior's Fen gravel pits, Peterborough

Mike Weedon and I first found this bird on 9 April as it flew over Prior's Fen, presumably on its way to roost on the nearby Nene Washes RSPB reserve.

I saw it again in May and managed to get some snaps which clearly show a ghost of a hood. In flight, the wing pattern resembles that of a Grey-headed Gull. Debate is still ongoing as to what species this is (some think Hartlaub's Gull) or whether it is a hybrid - if so, of what?
