Trades Club, Trades RootsHebden Bridge
Hebden Bridge is a small former mill town in the Yorkshire Pennines between
Manchester and Leeds. For over 25 years it has been home to “the greatest little gig venue in the north” at the Trades Club. The Club, with a capacity of just 140 seated, 180 standing, has consistently managed to attract world class
musicians from across the musical spectrum, happy to play at a club with such a welcoming and intimate vibe. When Steve Tilston moved to the town he was keen to get involved, and offered to host monthly Trades Roots gigs.
This album records some of the highlights from the first eighteen months of them. I’d like to thank all of the artists who have played at Trades Roots, and those represented here for giving their permission for us to include their performances on this CD. Particular thanks go to Steve for making Trades Roots happen, and long may these evenings continue.

This has been a richly rewarding project, a perfect musical memento of some unforgettable performances at my monthly Trades Roots presentations. A big thank you once again to all the players for their contributions and to all those who have given their time and financial support to benefit the Trades Club, a special place in a special town.

About the Performers
Clive Gregson has been “one of the most emotionally literate songwriters around” since the 80s. He has worked as a solo artist, in bands Any Trouble and Plainsong, and in collaboration with Christine Collister, Boo Hewerdine and Eddi Reader. www.clivegregson.com
Martha Tilston cites her father Steve and stepmother Maggie Boyle as musical influences but her songs arise from her experiences as a young woman in the early years of the century. “As political as she is romantic, her voice weaves magic”. www.marthatilston.co.uk
Michael Chapman emerged from the Cornish and Yorkshire folk scenes in the 60s. More than twenty albums later this guitar legend is still writing and performing, an “old white blues guy” with a body of music that deserves wider recognition. www.michaelchapman.co.uk
Duck Baker, one of the highest regarded fingerstyle guitarists in the US, has a repertoire spanning the history of jazz from ragtime via swing and masters like Thelonious Monk and Herbie Nichols to the free music of New York’s John Zorn and others. www.duckbaker.com
Kirsty McGee and Mat Martin were described as “Simon and Garfunkel: The Tim Burton Version”. Rough Trade praised their “inspirational musicianship – joyously engaging songs, shining with American influences”.

Steve Ashley was at the forefront of folk rock with the original Albion Band, and then with Ragged Robin, but his reputation as a superlative singer songwriter rests with his solo career, from his revered first album Stroll On to 2007’s Time and Tide. www.steveashley.co.uk
Steve Tilston has been one of the UK’s foremost guitarist-singer-songwriters since the 70s. Reviewing his 2008 album Ziggurat, Mojo commented that “Tilston’s work simply gets better as time goes on”.

Chris Smither, acclaimed New England-based acoustic blues performer sums it up: “When you write a song, you’ve got three or four minutes to get ahold of somebody, and if they can remember one phrase or line, you’ve won. I think I’ve accomplished that.” www.smither.com
Robin Williamson co-founded the eclectic Incredible String Band in the 60s, and formed the Merry Band in the 70s. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer and storyteller, his recent solo albums have incorporated folk, jazz, classical and eastern influences. www.pigswhiskermusic.co.uk
Wizz Jones has been a leading light on the folk and blues scene since the early 60s. Himself inspired by Big Bill Broonzy, Wizz was an early influence on John Renbourn and Eric Clapton. Bert Jansch once described him as “the most underrated guitarist ever”. www.wizzjones.com
Flossie Malavialle is a French singer now based in Darlington. Accompanying herself on guitar, she sings a mixture of her own songs and covers, and has recorded separate albums devoted to the songs of Piaf and Jacques Brel.

Jez Lowe, described by Richard Thompson as “the best songwriter to come out of England in a long time”, writes poignant and witty songs about the north-east. Whether performing solo or with his band the Bad Pennies, he is “one of the hottest acts around”. www.jezlowe.com
Pete Morton is a singer-songwriter and entertainer whose finely crafted songs provide a commentary for our lives. His 2008 album Casa Abierta comprises 10 songs, each in a different language.

Stephen Fearing is a Canadian songwriter and performer who records both as a solo artist and with the roots rock band Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. His 2009 “Best Of” album The Man Who Married Music showcases his affecting lyrics and masterful musicianship.
