Training 4 Dogs - Click and Treat

Dog Training ClickerClicker Training uses conditioning to reinforce desirable behaviours, it is a simple and very effective method of communicating approval in a way that cannot be confused or misunderstood. A Clicker is a small plastic box that contains a tensioned metal tongue, when the tongue is depressed and released using one finger, the tongue it makes a distinctive "Click".
There is nothing magic about the click but it is a distinctive noise that is unlikely to be encountered in everyday life and so it becomes a special "training" noise. The basis of Clicker training is "Click and Treat" (C&T) , initially the dog is conditioned by to expect a treat whenever it hears a click. When the dog has learned the basic "click means treat" rule, the dog is then clicked and treated for performing desirable behaviours such as sitting or coming.
When the dog hears a click it knows that a reward is coming and since the dog hears a click when it has done something good, the dog very quickly learns what behaviour will trigger the wonderful clicking treat machine and will chose to perform those behaviours.
Clicker training is unemotional and consistent, unlike the human voice or human body language. A click sounds the same whatever the handler's mood, there is no room for tone of voice or body language to betray emotions, so there is no room for confusion in the dog's mind as to whether it has done well or not. A Click means "correct". A click is always positive, no click means "nothing to reward", no click is not negative it simply means no reward has been earned.
Because clicker training is consistent and positive, dogs learn very quickly but it also makes dogs think for themselves, they use their brain - a requirement seldom made on them in traditional dog training techniques. Because there is no punishment or telling off, dogs respond very enthusiastically to clicker training and training becomes a fun time.

Dog Training Clicker ClassesOur Clicker Lessons

At Training 4 Dogs we prefer clicker training because it offers so many advantages over the more traditional methods of "putting" a dog in the right position and of luring, with the timing and confusion problems that that can sometimes cause.
Clicker training is "hands off" so there is no wresting with boisterous dogs or trying to man-handle or lure them into a preferred position.
Clicker training is particularly suited to clever, keen, greedy dogs because they are quick to learn and highly motivated by favourite treats, Labradors, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are excellent subjects for Clicker Training although it is successful with almost all breeds.
Clicker training is very helpful where other training efforts have failed because the handler is emotional or has poor timing, and it is especially good for rescue dogs who may have had bad experiences of other training efforts.
We regularly run special "Introduction To Clicker Classes" and encourage Clicker Training in all our classes. Private 1-2-1 clicker lessons are the fastest way to train or re-train a dog (and handler).

Puppy Socialisation Classes ThumbnailOur puppy socialisation classes are strictly for the babies. Puppies can join from 8 weeks of age or as soon as they have had their first inoculation. From 8 to 14 weeks puppies are at their most receptive and the need for socialisation at it is most imperative. Our premises are scrupulously disinfected and our classes very carefully managed to ensure that puppies get lots of experiences - all of them good. Click Here for details.

Adult Classes ThumbnailWe offer adult training classes at a variety of times in the afternoon and evening. Numbers in our classes are strictly limited to ensure that everyone gets plenty of time and attention and the chance to fulfill their potential. Our classes are carefully planned and managed, we don't take any adult dog until it has been assessed to ensure that it will benefit from learning a class environment and to ensure that classes remain orderly and conducive to learning. Private Training and 1-2-1 Sessions ThumbnailMost of our training takes place in private 1-2-1 sessions, sometimes these are aimed at dealing with a specific challenge such as not coming back or pulling on the lead.
