Training 4 Dogs - Things to Bring to Class

Border Collie and CaseThe first time you come to our Puppy Socialisation Puppy Parties, Puppy Classes, Dog Training Classes or Agility Classes you MUST bring your dog's inoculation certificate with you, if you don't you will not be able to bring your puppy or dog onto the premises.

Bring tit-bits with you to the class. Tit-bits should be very tasty, easy for your puppy or dog to eat and very small. Tit-bits are used as lures to guide puppies and dogs into appropriate positions, for example into a sit.
Tit-bits are also used as rewards to help reinforce desirable behaviours. In an unfamiliar room with other puppies and dog around them, new people to interest them and lots of strange sights and sounds to excite them puppies and dog are easily distracted and can find it difficult to concentrate on training, tit-bits are a great help in getting dogs and puppies to concentrate.
To make up for all the distractions, tit-bits need to be extra tasty (and smelly), bits of cheese are ideal, bits of cooked sausage, smoked ham, salami or liver are also very tempting. Tit-bits should be very easy to eat, crunchy kibbles of food, biscuit or proprietary dog treats are dry and crumbly, by the time a puppy or dog has eaten the treat and cleared up most of the crumbs the momentum of training has been lost. Dry food can also leave crumbs on the floor, this can lead to your puppy or dog developing a "hoovering" habit and becoming more interested in searching the floor than in working with you, crumbs may also distract other puppies or dogs who may have to work in the same area.

Tit-bits should be small, cheese should be cut into cubes the size of a sugar cube and then cut in to 4 or 9 smaller cubes, depending upon the size of your dog or puppy, pieces that size are still significant rewards but are quick to eat and will not fill up your puppy or dog . Remember that you are offering rewards - a bonus, not trying to feed your puppy or dog Sunday lunch.
Your puppy or dog must be on a collar and lead when at classes, we recommend a flat nylon or leather collar and a light lead. Do not bring your puppy or dog to classes on a retractable lead such as a "flexi lead". Retractable leads are fine in a secure open space but are totally unsuitable for training classes where the lead is your "telephone" to your puppy or dog.

Dress suitably remembering that a lot of time at classes is spent on the floor with your puppy of dog. Trousers are most suitable for training as they don't flap around and won't distract the puppies.
A pocket or "bum-bag" is handy for Tit-bits .
Wear soft shoes, puppies and dogs tend to get all over the place and heavy boots and high heels are a real hazard when teaching a puppy or dog to walk beside you!
Bring plastic bags so that if your puppy or dog makes a mess you can clear up.
Bring your puppy or dog's favourite toy.
Bring a suitable grooming tool with you, one of the things that you will need to be able to do is handle and groom your dog.
And of course remember to bring your puppy or dog!

Puppy Socialisation Classes ThumbnailOur puppy socialisation classes are strictly for the babies. Puppies can join from 8 weeks of age or as soon as they have had their first inoculation. From 8 to 14 weeks puppies are at their most receptive and the need for socialisation at it is most imperative. Our premises are scrupulously disinfected and our classes very carefully managed to ensure that puppies get lots of experiences - all of them good. Click Here for details.

Adult Classes ThumbnailWe offer adult training classes at a variety of times in the afternoon and evening. Numbers in our classes are strictly limited to ensure that everyone gets plenty of time and attention and the chance to fulfill their potential. Our classes are carefully planned and managed, we don't take any adult dog until it has been assessed to ensure that it will benefit from learning a class environment and to ensure that classes remain orderly and conducive to learning. Private Training and 1-2-1 Sessions ThumbnailMost of our training takes place in private 1-2-1 sessions, sometimes these are aimed at dealing with a specific challenge such as not coming back or pulling on the lead. More often private lessons are simply more convenient and better focused to the needs of the individual. Adult dogs will need to be assessed at a private 1-2-1 session before being admitted to our Adult Training Classes Click Here for details
