Introduction

Olton Chess Club meets at Tyseley WMC every Tuesday, from 7pm and has its own website. The club has five teams competing in the Birmingham & District Chess League and 3 in the Leamington & District League. During the summer weeks, an internal Tournament is run over several weeks.

Team Performances 2008-09

Birmingham League

Division 1 are finished mid-table, with a creditable 11 points from 10 matches. Division 2A started well, finishing 5th with 15 points out of 24. The 2B team did well to avoid relegation again, thanks to a last gasp win over Warley Quinborne 2B. Division 4 finished mid-table, a good performance after being promoted last year. Division 6 also finished mid-table, a good performance with limited resources.

The club hosted the Birmingham & District League's annual Lightning Team Tournament in March. Over 60 players competed in 2 sections, in games played at 10 seconds per move. Olton A finished second in section A, while the B team were equal 3rd. The C and D team finished low down in section B, but a good time was had by all.

Leamington League Champions

The Division 1A team won the League Title and have reached the Open Cup Final. The B team finished 6th, with 11 points from 14 matches. The Division 2C team finished 4th and lost their Under-625 Semi-Final.

Open Cup Team Win Leamington League Cup Final

The Open cup team have won the Knockout Trophy Final, which was held at Leamington chess club on Tuesday 28th April. Olton were without top board Phil Holt, but there were wins for Alan Lloyd, Mark Cundy, Robert Wallman and Dave Cheshire. Richard Smith drew on board 2.

Phil Holt picks up League Double

Phil Holt has won the Leamington League Lightning Tournament, which was held at Solihull's Blossomfield club on Wednesday 22nd April. Phil scored 8½/9 drawing only to Robert Reynolds in the last round. The tournament games are played at the rate of 5 minutes per player per game and there were 28 entrants in total, including six from the Olton club.

Phil has also won the League's Stanley Gibbins trophy, which is awarded annually to the League player with the highest win ratio. He scored an impressive 87.5% and was unbeaten in all Leamington League competitions.
