Getting Started
Before learning to drive you need to get a provisional licence. You have to be at least 17 years old,
(or 16 years and receiving disability living allowance). Application forms D1 and D750 are available from any Post Office. (Check out our links page). You can apply up to 3 months before your 17th birthday.

In order to sit the practical test you must first pass both parts of the theory test in the same day.
(Check out our links page). After passing the practical test you can apply for a full UK licence.
Regular professional tuition from a DSA approved driving instructor is certainly the best way to learn to drive. And regular practice with family or/and friends is an excellent way to develop the skills you have been taught by your instructor. However there are some legal requirements which must be observed.
- your vehicle must have a current road-tax certificate and a current MOT certificate
- you must be insured to drive the vehicle
- the supervising driver must be at least 21 years old and have help a full licence for 3 years for the vehicle being used.
- the vehicle must display legally sized L plates on the front and back, and these must be clearly visible. They must be removed or covered up when driven by the full licence holder.
