WHO WE ARE We are two enthusiasts who became involved in making raku fired ceramics whilst at the University of Gloucestershire. The word
raku means pleasure or enjoyment and originates in 16th
century Japan. It
is a relatively low temperature, quick fire process whereby pots are
removed from a red hot kiln and cooled rapidly in combustible
material such as sawdust or water. The resulting thermal shock produces a
‘crazed’ glaze surface, often with stress fractures, all of which are
typical of the charm of raku. No two pieces are ever the same! Our
attraction to raku was its immediacy and unpredictability making it an
ideal vehicle for experiencing the excitement of quick fired ceramics. Our philosophy is to provide the opportunity for others to share this excitement, and to explore the ceramic production process, from making to raku firing, all in a relaxed and informal environment.
