The Bowen Technique was developed by Tom Bowen, in Geelong, Australia. Although he worked as an industrial chemist, he became interested in bodywork and developed his subtle technique in the 1950’s. His reputation spread and soon he was treating 100’s of people. In 1974 a Victorian Government enquiry was set up to investigate the use of alternative therapies in Victoria. The Commission discovered that Tom Bowen had treated 13000 clients a year, with over 85% requiring only 1 or 2 treatments. Also in 1974, Oswald Rentsch, an osteopath and naturopath met with Tom Bowen and was taught the Bowen Technique, he since went on to document Tom’s work. Julian Baker brought The Bowen Technique to Britain and Europe where it has become a very popular therapy for skeletal and muscular problems.
The Bowen Technique is a very gentle, non-invasive and subtle rolling movement of the muscles, tendons and fascia throughout the body. The pressure, often termed ‘eyeball pressure’, is a light touch that can be comfortably applied to the eyeball without causing pain or distress. These treatments can be applied though light clothing.
There are many theories why this form of treatment works. One of the more accepted ideas is that Bowen movements connect the parts of the body with the brain, using many of the receptors throughout the body. These moves disturb the muscles and the energetic flow making the body and brain re-assess their states of well being, so initiating the healing process and bringing the body back to homeostasis
