MAMMALS

A total of  41 species was seen including the Peccary sp but excluding feral Cape Buffalo & Pigs, the tame Collared Peccary and unidentified rodents and bats.

Brown Four-eyed Opossum  Metacchirus nudicaudatus

A small  opposum seen along the boardwalk at Araras on a late night spotlighting session on our first night at Araras appeared noticeably smaller than the two opossums seen two days later, and appeared to have an all pale tail suggesting this species.

Grey Four-eyed Opossum Philander opossum

Two along the boardwalk at Araras while spotlighting prior to dawn on the final day of the trip.

Seven-banded Armadillo Dasypus septemcinctus

An armadillo crossing the road on our way back from Canastra to Sao Roque caused controversy with different members of the group seeing different features fitting a number of species. However based on the carapace shape, tail length and most importantly Regina’s previous experience of armadillos it was agreed that it was probably a Seven-banded.

Giant Anteater   Myrmecophaga tridactyla

§       Unexpectedly difficult in Canastra on this tour possibly due to the dry conditions. Not seen until 1700 on the first day when two were seen in quick succession. A second extremely distant individual spotted by MM the following day.

§       In the Pantanal superb views close to the boardwalk at Araras on two consecutive days, another seen distantly from the Tower Hide and good views of a third while spotlighting along the Transpantaneira south of Araras.

Southern Tamandua Tamandua tetradactyla

§       The highlight of the first night’s spotlighting when the driver heard one as we drove along the Transpantaneira south of Pixaim. We reversed to find it ripping open a termite nest on the side of a tree and had great views at close range.

§       A secondr was seen walking along the Transpantaneira south of Pixaim later the same evening.

§       At Araras on our first spotlighting session  the driver found another clinging to the side of a tree less than two metres from  the vehicle and we had further amazing views at close range for several minutes before it shot up the tree at amazing speed.

§       Our 4th and final tamandua was seen along the Tranapantaneira to the south of Araras on the final spotlighting session of the trip.

Jaguar

Panthera onca

§       A male spotted by LG on the south bank of the Rio Cuiaba as we returned to Porto Jofre after our first day on the river gave good views albeit in fading light for 10-15 minutes much to the relief of all the clients.

§       A superb female spotted by RR on the north bank of the Rio Cuiaba the following morning gave prolonged views and provided excellent photo opportunites.

Unusually both individuals were seen along the main river which seemed to be true of most sightings while we were there. It seem likely that Jaguars may have been displaced from the tributories by the late and heavy rains which had flooded the banks and have yet to move back to the tributories as the water levels have receded.

Caraca,

§       One particularly hungry individual visited the terrace several times between 1830 and 2130 on the first evening staying to eat for long periods, a second individual loitered briefly at the far end of the carpark (RW only) but did’nt come up for meat.
