Just up the road in Ashton and a carnival atmosphere as the whole village and more greet and cheer on the Olympic Torch as it passes through.

Guy Gibson Memorial
Today a ceremonial unveiling of another plaque. This for Wing CC Guy Gibson VC, who lead the 1943 Dambusters Raid. His mother was from Porthleven and he spent his childhood years here as well as returning home on holidays and leave. Funds for the plaque raised from Mr Vic Strike's (Top left- centre) film on Guy Gibson.

Saturday morning and a gin clear sea and flat calm water. The May light is also making the views very sharp.

May and the sun today has yet to get a hold of things. At least the sea is flat and this chap is heading out to the great blue (grey) yonder for a spot of fishing. Unveiled on the quay by the old HMS Anson canons last month, a plaque to two sons of Porthleven who perished on the RMS Titanic. Finally a look east across the beach.

April gales and the sea has whipped up. Rain had been forecasted for all day but the morning was sunny and clear.

Good Friday and clear skies and light winds. After a cool start the sun is now warming things up and the beach here at low tide has a steady procession going across.

porthleven daffodils porthleven potatoes rinsey ponies near porthleven
Is spring on the way? Could be from the two crops that surround Porthleven at the present - daffodils and early potatoes. The third photo of the ponies is not related at all and is a shame not to use it. They are up on the cliffs at Rinsey. But were due to be moved on to Cudden Point (a few miles further west) sometime in Feb.

Late January and a couple miles west of us at Rinsey - Technically Trewavas Head. This is a nice walk along the coast path but today we drove up here to the small car park (NT) and did a short 1 1/2 mile loop. In the middle picture Porthleven is in the distance. The mines on the right are the same a below from our kayak trip, but seen from atop the cliff.

porthleven rock fall porthleven donkey field west porthleven sunset in january
After reports of a cliff rock fall from our old net drying field on Loe Bar Road, we set off to investigate. By all accounts it was a bit of a rumble when it happened. Looking the other way is a lovely view in the January sun. The crisp short winter day finished with a beautiful sunset.
16jan12
A prominent feature on the coast west from us are the old engine houses from the Trewavas copper mine. Normally reached by a nice walk along the coast path on this occasion we paddle our kayaks there. The houses and rock formations are quite a sight and thoughts turn to the miners who underground tunnelled out under the sea over 150 years ago. Heading back along the coast we meet the local bird life perching on the rocks and then to the Megiliggar Rocks. A SSSI site and geologists favourite. Trewavas granite was also used in the construction of  Porthleven harbour and perhaps we are also looking at the off cuts that did not make it.

The 28th of September and some of the lowest and highest tide of the year. Above - Low tide and firstly from Peverall Terrace looking down and then on the harbour side with a solitary explorer. Next, many a local nipper has learnt to swim in this rock pool. We walk along the pier now and look up at is bow and finally peek around the corner to the harbour again.

Evening and high tide and down the harbour again. Not much swell tonight fortunately but the sea looking like it is about to burst out.

1)Aug.bank holiday Monday and some lovely sunny weather. Its a spring tide and so rock hopping is a bonus at the very low waters. We are at the rocks west of the harbour and accessible only at low tide. Above right - the old tin mines of Trewavas are in the distance.
29aug11
Porthleven Lifeboat Day. The jewel in the village calendar attracting large crowds around the harbour for the many stalls and demonstrations. Highlights were The RNLI  Lizard and Penlee lifeboats and the helicopter air sea rescue demonstration from 771 Navel Air Squadron based at nearby Culdrose.

Cycling around Porthleven: We are lucky to be surrounded by some nice lanes which are ideal to explore by bike. Especially so on a summers morning. The pics above are from a great easy'ish 14miler. We have done it on a Mtb but road or touring bikes are fine. From top left - Into Green Lane (note the old sign post) and on to Sithney and then Godolphin. On and up through the NT Estate brings us to. Bottom left - looking at Tregonning Hill and skirting around it the views are great towards the west. After Ashton it is down hill all the way back to Porthleven and looking at the lizard Peninsula in the distance. (full route details on request)

 Welcome to Porthleven

We are a local business offering a selection of seven of our own individual self-catering accommodation sleeping up to 7 persons in the beautiful harbour village with 3 miles of beach, of Porthleven.

We are ideally positioned along the coastal Loe Bar Road. Where is this? Have a look at Contact Us for our location and village maps. But they are grouped together on or around the cliff top, overlooking the beach and Mounts Bay.

We have parking for each property in our own off road car park, which is only a minutes walk from all the Accommodation.

Steps to the to the beach are only 40 metres away, which is ideal for swimming or a stroll on the sands. And it is only a few minutes walk down to the pier and centre of the village and harbour side, which is surrounded by a variety of cafes, shops, bakery, restaurants and pubs.

Porthleven is also an excellent holiday base for seeing this part of Cornwall. To the west, Penzance and Lands End. The east, the Lizard Peninsula. Inland the attractive cathedral city of Truro.

If you want to leave the car behind, then for walking or cycling, its out of your front door and onto the coast path or Cornish lanes. Heading either east or west  with spectacular views all around. Look at our Walking and Cycling Cornwall page. Not sure which to do? Have a weather check to help decide.

What else is there to do here? If you don't fancy a stroll about the harbour and shops, a coastal ramble, scenic drive, swimming, sunbathing and playing on the beach, a fishing or boat trip, a kayak paddle or taking it too easy. Then look at our What's on Porthleven or What's on West guides for events happening in Porthleven and west Cornwall.
