Education

Education forms an important aspect of the Trusts work programme. We work with a range of other organisations including the Highland Council Ranger Service and the local primary schools to teach the general public about fish and their environment.

This is undertaken primarily through electrofishing demonstrations and the use of kick sampling to look at the invertebrates within the rivers. We have also helped in the organisation and running of a project on riverine ecology with the local primary schools.

2009/10 saw the introduction of 'Fishy Tales', learning about different aspects of salmonid and eel biology through a series of workshops and field visits. We also undertook a demonstration with PAW (Partners Against Wildlife Crime) and are involved in courses and work experience within the local High School.

In addition, we run an annual seminar for local ghillies and river workers. Using guest speakers, this addresses topics of interest to the audience. Notes on the Seminar are available.

The Trust Biologists are happy to give talks and demonstrations to any individuals or groups within the area, as well as helping with the running of projects where relevant to the Trusts work. If you would like to organise a talk or demonstration, or to run a project within the Trust area, then please contact the Biologists on wsft@btconnect.com
