Habitat surveys involve walking the rivers and burns of the catchments, noting the available habitat, the presence of barriers and any potential problems for the fish. These can include erosion, lack of spawning gravels, gravel compaction or poorly designed culverts, to name but a few.
The information gained from these surveys were used to produce detailed recommendations to the owners on ways to improve the habitat for fish, and therefore the fish populations within the catchments. The Trust will also provide advice and assistance to any proprietors interested in carrying out these recommendations.
To date the following systems have been surveyed and Management Plans produced:
2000 - Polla, Laxford, Inver and Garvie.
2001 - Bhadaidh Daraich and Hope
2002 - Rhiconich, Bad na Baighe, Duart, Culag and Kirkaig.
2008 - Geisgeil, Gleann Leireag and Polly.
Some habitat improvements have been carried out, following the recommendations within the plan, on the Polla, Laxford, Bhadaidh Daraich and Rhiconich catchments.
It is proposed that further catchment management plans be developed in the coming years.
